Barry attended Birkby Fartown Community Centre to see for himself the importance of the ESOL courses (English for Speakers of Other Languages). Amid the threat of cuts to the languages classes ran by Kirklees College, Barry has promised to support the campaign to keep the lessons free and raise the matter in Parliament.
The cuts would be life changing for many of the women that attend because they find it essential to be able to live their lives. Surraya Begum from Pakistan said that the course allows her to complete the simple tasks the so many of us take for granted, such as the ability to ask for food over a counter or describe to the doctor what ailment they have. Fozia Shah, also from Pakistan, made a plea for the funiding to the course to remain intact. She said "I would like to stay here at these classes but I cannot afford £600 (the price they would have to pay if funding is cut).
