Local Hero Simon Newton who, in the middle of the night found his mother collapsed in the bathroom and had the presence of mind to call his farther, who was at work and the ambulance service to aid his sick mother.
Simon woke in the early hours to the screams of his mother, who was lying on the bathroom floor in agony. 9 year old Simon had the presence of mind to grab his mum's mobile phone and call both his dad, who was working nights and the ambulance service. He threw a blanket onto his mum to keep her warm until help arrived.
In hospital Simons mum, Susan was told that without the prompt action of her son her gall bladder could well have burst and in a matter of hours Susan could have died.
Susan has now fully recovered and on Friday 30th October 2009 Simon, who is also a member of the Boys' Brigade at Brackenhall United Reform Church was awarded a Presidents Commendation by Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman.
Local MP Barry Sheerman said "if Simon had not acted so quickly there is no doubt his mother would have died. Simon is a credit to his family, school and the community and I congratulate him. Well done Simon."
