Government decisions to cut free swimming schemes for the young and elderly would mean a loss to Kirklees of almost £250,000, 200 hours of free swimming per week and an impact on health and social benefits to key target groups. Councillor Mehboob Khan said the cuts would impact on those most in need and would have a negative impact on members of society trying to lead healthy and active lifestyles. Barry Sheerman has welcomed Mr Khan's pledge to keep free swimming available for as long as possible.
