On 7th September 2010, Barry Sheerman asked the Under Secretary of State for Health,  Anne Milton:
"What steps he is taking to improve the quality of training for doctors?"
Anne Milton (Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Public Health), Health; Guildford, Conservative) answered:
"The content and standard of medical training is the responsibility of the General Medical Council (GMC), which is the competent authority for medical training in the United Kingdom. Its role is that of custodian of quality standards in medical education and practice.
Since the publication of the White Paper, "Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS", the Department has been working to develop a new system to deliver education and training based on the principle that it should be driven by healthcare provider decisions and underpinned by strong clinical leadership. A public consultation is planned for later this year."
