On 27 October 2010, Barry Sheerman attended the launch of Silver Star's 50 Parliamentary Day Challenge along with 71 other parliamentarians including Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, Opposition Leader Ed Miliband and Community and Local Government Secretary of State Eric Pickles. Each MP was issued a pedometer to measure the number of steps taken in a Parliamentary day. The winner of this challenge will be announced in February 2011. There are currently over 2.5 million people diagnosed with diabetes in the UK and another 1 million people who have type 2 diabetes but do not yet know it. This event aims to draw attention to the need for early diagnosis of the condition and the importance of physical activity to prevent the onset of diabetes.
