Huddersfield MP, Barry Sheerman, joins with local business leaders and  community groups to celebrate the 1st Anniversary of the successful 'Greenstreams' rivers project. On Friday 12th November, Mr. Sheerman will launch the 2nd year of the project at the Galpharm Stadium by encouraging wider involvement from the Huddersfield business community and promoting greater  environmental sustainability within the region.
Â
Mr. Sheerman said: "The fundamental key to this project is having support from our local business community as well as from the Council, the College, the University and the third sector. I am delighted that so many of our partners are showing they are serious about investing back in to our area community."Â
Greenstreams now has an established warden service, run by Beth Allcock from Environmental Alliance. Beth commented: "This work is helping to maintain and improve various sites along the River Colne. It's really important, if we are to encourage more people to visit the river that we look after it. Volunteers working as part of Greenstreams Project are a big help in that process, improving the footpaths, wildlife habitats and other areas."
Urban Mines have developed and piloted an education programme teaching bio diversity through our rivers to primary school children. This includes classroom based lessons as well as site visits involving fishing and planting native wildflowers. The education package is now ready to roll out more widely.
Next year's highlight will be the raising of Mayflies which are a vitally important food source for fish like trout and grayling. Training for this will be provided by the Wild Trout Trust.
The Calder and Colne Rivers Trust have established an invertebrate monitoring programme for the River Colne, again run by volunteers. This can help establish the health of the river at specific sites. Ian Oates, the Chair of the trust, said "Over the next year we hope to get further support to reseed the river with invertebrates that were knocked out by recent pollution incidents".
Greenstremas is also working on an innovative project to modify the weir systems in the Colne and Calder to encourage the migration of salmon back to our rivers.
