Question to the Leader of the House of Commons

Posted: Nov 11, 2010

Question to the Leader of the House of Commons During a debate in the House of Commons on 11 November 2010 Barry Sheerman asked the Leader of the House of Commons, George Young: The Leader of the House will know that the whole concept of the big society is supposed to be based on volunteers, voluntarism, the third sector and charitable intervention. Could we have an early debate about the fact that, only six months into this new Government, the sources of funding for the third sector right across the piece have either been frozen or disappeared? Such activity is essential to any society. What is he going to do about it? George Young, Leader of the House of Commons, answered: I understand the hon. Gentleman's point; voluntary organisations face the same pressures as many other organisations in accessing funds, but not all voluntary work involves expenditure. Many people give their time for nothing, and I hope that the voluntary sector can respond to the challenges in the same way as everyone else is having to respond.
