Barry Sheerman challenged Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday in the House of Commons about the government's proposals to sell Forestry Commission land.
"Two hundred years ago, the privileged people in this country managed to steal the English common land from the English common people. Why are the Government returning to such activity by taking the forests and woods of our country from the ordinary people?"
While Cameron responded that other organisations could manage the woodlands better than the Forestry Commission, Barry believes the Conservative Party has failed to clarify how public access will be maintained.
The Public Bodies Bill supported by the Tories will dramatically increase the role of the private sector and jeopardise the public's current benefits from all types of forests. The Bill could pave the way for a complete sell-off of England's forests, restructuring a significant part of the country's national heritage.
Barry strongly believes the Forestry Commission is a valuable national resource, as it provides recreation and receives over 40 million visits a year. The Commission also helps the UK adapt to climate change through efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Barry has signed EDM 1199 opposing the Forestry Commission Reductions and supports the Save England's Ancient Forests campaign launched by the Woodland Trust. Barry has always supported measures to help the environment and will continue to fight against the government's plans to sell the public woodlands and forests.
