In support of this year's No Smoking Day on 9th March 2011, Barry Sheerman signed Early Day Motion 1400 congratulating the campaign. Barry supports the recent tobacco control legislation and hopes the Government will continue to support No Smoking Day.
Smoking remains the number one cause of premature and avoidable deaths in the UK. Barry believes this habit needs to be curbed through active governmental support of anti-smoking motions.
While the government currently aims to accelerate the reductions in smoking among adults in England seen in the last five years, Barry added an amendment to the EDM calling on all Ministers and honourable Members to lead by example and cease smoking in 2011.
As the No Smoking Day Campaign successfully completed its 28th annual event, Barry hopes that more attention will be drawn to the harmful effects of smoking and that more information will become available for those who want to stop smoking.
