On Tuesday 1st November, Barry Sheerman MP attended a Young People's Trust Parliamentary Reception at the House of Commons hosted by X-Factor presenter and Young People's Trust for the Environment President Dermot O'Leary.
Barry spoke about the work of the Trust with Dermot, who has been a supporter and President of the Trust for over six years and met four children from St. Thomas of Canterbury RC Primary School in Guildford, who had delivered a presentation on their experiences on a residential environment course held in Dorset run by the Trust.
Barry said,
“I was pleased to be able to attend this event for the second time. It is a wonderful charity and I was delighted to hear about the amazing environmental work school children from across the country have produced through its engagement with the charity. The enthusiasm from the Trust’s staff is only matched by the children involved, it really is inspiring.”
The Young People's Trust for the Environment is a charity which aims to encourage young people's understanding of the environment and the need for sustainability.
With climate change being such a big issue for everyone, there has probably never been a more important time for environmental education.
Every year the YPTE run the national competition the TOTAL Green School Awards which involve over 20,000 children and offers the chance for primary schools to win £5,000. Last year the team's three education officers delivered over 800 free school talks to over 31,000 young people and their fact-filled website received over 1.73 million visitors.
