John Clare

Posted: Jul 9, 2009

John Clare Supporters of the John Clare Trust and Clare Cottage were on Saturday present at a poetry session where local M.P. Barry Sheerman and local poet John Duffy recited some of their favourite John Clare poems.

The poetry session was intended to raise awareness for the John Clare Trust and The John Clare walk which is attempting to raise a substantial amount of money for an environmental and educational centre of excellence at the site of the 19th century poet' cottage in Peterborough.

The Centre is trying to get children to receive education out of the classroom and into the countryside after a shocking statistic revealed that in a single generation youth access to the countryside has plummeted 50%. As Mr. Sheerman commented "I'm obsessive about education outside the classroom and as Chair of the Select Committee on Children, Schools and families I care greatly, and this all goes towards the £2.5 million we have raised for the John Clare Trust already".

The poetry session was a success with many attending, raising awareness for the 80 mile John Clare walk which will commence on Friday 10th ending with the grand opening of the John Clare Centre for Environmental and Educational Excellence opening on Monday 13th July.
