Barry Sheerman: To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government how many people local authorities serving Kirklees employed in (a) 1997 and (b) 2008.

Barbara Follett (Minister of State (East of England) Regional Affairs): The Department does not hold records of the number of people employed by individual local authorities. The Office for National Statistics collects employment statistics for the public sector including local authorities in England and Wales as part of the Quarterly Public Sector Employment Survey. Data from this survey have been published with written permission from all local authorities by the Local Government Association on their website
